This is a replica of a Chain mail 'Coif' which is a piece of ancient body armour. Mail was thought to have been invented by the Celts, the earliest example was found in a Celtic burial in Romania. It was a popular form of defence for warriors of the Viking and Medieval periods. The coif was designed to protect the head, neck and shoulders against damage from bladed weapons and it was very effective at doing so.
